[Job Opportunity] Africa Fieldwork Coordinator

GAHP is seeking an experienced fieldwork and research coordinator to support the implementation of the Lead in Food project in Africa. The Coordinator will work closely with Columbia University, GAHP, GRIT, government authorities, and local partners to implement field sampling and data collection activities in accordance with agreed-upon research protocols and project objectives.

1. Location: Africa/remote

2. Duration: 1 year, renewable

3. Type: Part-time/flexible consultancy

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and adaptation of field protocols and sampling strategies, accounting for local conditions.

• Support government engagement and coordination to facilitate participation, permissions and support for field activities.

• Conduct preliminary site visits to identify sampling locations, engage with farmers and other stakeholders, and prepare field activities.

• Coordinate and supervise field teams conducting data and sample collection across multiple sites, ensuring adherence to approved protocols.

• Coordinate the handling, documentation, processing and transfer of samples and liaise with designated laboratories to support timely and appropriate analysis.

• Organise follow-up field activities where required to address gaps or complete the sampling programme.

• Hold regular meetings with field staff and data collectors to monitor progress and address operational challenges.

• Maintain accurate records of field activities, samples and data collected.

• Provide regular updates to the project team on progress, challenges and emerging issues.

• Participate in wider project meetings and undertake other project-related activities as agreed.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should be an experienced professional with a strong background in field-based research, environmental health, public health, agriculture, food safety, toxicology or a related discipline. Essential experience includes:

• Demonstrated experience coordinating multi-site fieldwork and data or sample collection.

• Experience supervising field teams and working with local communities and stakeholders.

• Experience engaging with government authorities and research institutions.

• Strong organisational and project coordination skills, with excellent attention to detail.

• Experience with sample handling, laboratory coordination and research protocols is highly desirable.

• Ability to work independently and effectively across international and multidisciplinary teams.

• Excellent written and spoken English.
