GAHP Reaffirms Commitment to Address Air Pollution at WHO Global Conference

Colombia, March 2025, The 2nd WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, held from 24–28 March 2025 in Colombia, brings together governments, UN agencies, researchers, and civil society to advance clean air action and health protection. At this global forum, GAHP highlighted its continued support for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in addressing pollution, especially air pollution, through practical, country-led solutions.

Speaking at the conference, GAHP Executive Director Maria Paola Lia shared the Alliance’s commitment:

Our mission is to support low- and middle-income countries in prioritizing their pollution agenda impacting health outcomes, with air quality always among the top concerns. Today, at the WHO Air Quality Conference in Colombia, we reaffirm our commitment to support LMICs implementing the Health and Pollution Action Plan—a multi-stakeholder, country-led initiative that makes pollution a policy priority and creates a roadmap to address major challenges such as air pollution. We commit to supporting LMICs in attracting resources to implement that roadmap. We commit to advocate to raise awareness about pollution and air quality issues. Additionally, over the past three years, with UK Aid funding, GAHP has worked in Vietnam with local partners to reduce the harmful agricultural practice of open burning. By researching and promoting sustainable, profitable alternatives, we helped lower carbon emissions, improve health outcomes, and create economic value. Our model is replicable. Since open burning remains a global challenge, we are committed to continuing this work and exploring opportunities to expand it. We welcome collaboration.”
