Geneva, 3rd August 2026. The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) is pleased to welcome Tanzania as its newest Council Member, strengthening collective efforts to address pollution and protect public health.
Tanzania is committed to achieving a strong, safe, healthy and sustainable environment free from pollution. Through the Division of Environment in the Vice President’s Office, the Government of Tanzania coordinates environmental management and works to develop and review environmental policies, regulations and strategies, while supporting their implementation across ministries, agencies and local authorities
Tanzania brings significant experience in addressing environmental pollution, including through projects to control ozone-depleting substances under the Montreal Protocol, expand sustainable energy access for host communities and refugees in Kigoma, eliminate PCBs from transformer oils, develop a national action plan on marine pollution, reduce persistent organic pollutants from open waste burning across the SADC region, and implement a national waste management strategy through 2035.
“Through this collaboration with GAHP, Tanzania is committed to building a strong, safe, healthy, and sustainable environment free from pollution — for the well-being of our people and future generations,” said Dr Epaphroditus Canute Sabuni, Representative of the Division of Environment, Vice President's Office, Tanzania.
“Tanzania’s leadership on pollution prevention — from phasing out ozone-depleting substances and eliminating PCBs to expanding access to clean energy — reflects the kind of national action that advances our shared mission of improving health by addressing pollution. We are very pleased to welcome Tanzania to the GAHP Council and look forward to working together to strengthen action on pollution and health,” said Maria Paola Lia, GAHP Executive Director.
